Lady Mustangs Golf Hope Four's The Charm

Randal Brewer, Sports Editor

MARTINS MILL—The Lady Mustangs golf team will make its annual pilgrimage to the state tournament, and have to be hoping the upward trend since 2005 will continue.

Martins Mill golfers Christa Williams and Emily Wharton have made the trip three times already. In 2005 they were part of a team that placed fifth. They returned with Whitney Johnson in 2006 and placed third.

In 2007, the trio was joined by Kayla Glidewell, and found themselves one spot of the state title. The girls finished 12 strokes behind state champion Memphis. Now, there is only one more spot to move up.

This year, Williams, Wharton, Johnson and Glidewell are joined by Emily Williams. The team swept through the regional competition, winning by 181 strokes, and taking four of the top six places.

Christa Williams is the regional champion. Her two-day score of 170 was one stroke ahead of teammate Wharton, who took second. Newcomer Emily Williams was fourth with a 189; Johnson placed sixth with a 196; and Glidewell was 22 with a 234.

The tournament will be on May 5-6, at the William Morris Golf Course in Austin. Play begins at 7:30 a.m.
