Lillian Cannon

Services for Lillian Cannon, 91, Quinlan, were held at 10 a.m. Thursday, November 20, at First United Methodist Church of Quinlan, with Robert Jackson, Rev. Wally Williams, Dr. Howard Weiner, Rev. Larry Combs, Rev. David Hammond and Rev. Ben Smith officiating.

Burial was in Quinlan IOOF Cemetery under direction of Coker-Mathews Funeral Home.

Mrs. Cannon died November 17, 2008, in Dallas.

She was born January 2, 1917 in the Dixon Community, Hunt County, to Richard Hugh and Ethel Stover Strickland. She married Daniel C. "Dip" Cannon in 1935. She worked for the U.S. Postal Service for more than 30 years. She participated in many quartets and duets, and served as chairperson for many community singing events. She dedicated a large portion of her time to home demonstration clubs, churches, schools, as well as charity drives. She worked as a volunteer for many charities, such as the United Way and the American Cancer Society.

She worked as the secretary for the Quinlan IOOF Cemetery for 30 years and was a member of the Hunt County Fair Board since its inception. She was chairperson for the Quinlan Fellowship Club for many years and wrote a weekly column for the Tawakoni News, titled "Quinlan Personals", since the beginning of the newspaper. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Quinlan.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Daniel C. Cannon, in 2005; her parents; brothers, Basil, John, Billy Hugh and Gene Strickland and Richard Hugh Strickland Jr.; and sister, Lois Cagle.

Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Chris Cannon, Quinlan; sister, Willie Wolfe, Greenville; grandsons, Larry Cannon, Eric Wilkins, Danny Cannon, and wife Christie, and Scott Cannon, and wife Kimberley; great-grandchildren, Michael Aldridge, Karissa Aldridge, Katie Cannon and Aidan Cannon; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers included Irby Farmer, Boyd Shields, Penny Young, Kent Turner, Bruce Turner, Chuck Thompson, Larry Green and Larry Briscoe.

Memorials may be made to the Organ Fund of First United Methodist Church of Quinlan.
